South Korea’s state-run electric utility, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), is set to build a smart campus at Montgomery College, Maryland Governor, Larry Hogan announced on November 18 after signing of a letter of intent. For the agreement, KEPCO partnered with Korea’s largest energy utility, LS Industrial Systems (LSIS), Montgomery College, and the Maryland government to make a total investment of $3.3 million. The signing is the result of a year-long effort which began with KEPCO and the Maryland state government inking a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on comprehensive cooperation in smart grids and energy storage in October, 2015.
According to the agreement, KEPCO and LSIS will provide Montgomery College with technology engineering services such as a smart grid system and a solar energy generation system. Construction is planned for the first half of next year, turning six buildings on the Germantown campus into energy efficient green buildings. The project is expected to reduce power consumption by ten percent on the campus, and save the school $100,000 per year.
KEPCO made its first foray into the US energy market in August, purchasing a solar power plant in Colorado from Carlyle Group. At the same time, the two organizations agreed to collaborate on developing renewable energy. In November, KEPCO signed a MoU with state of Virginia on new energy business cooperation. This agreement enables the establishment of a cooperation system between KEPCO and the state government and firms in Virginia. The two sides will jointly develop projects in 10 new energy business sectors.

한국 국영 전력 공급 회사, 한국전력공사 (이하 한전)이 몽고메리 대학에 스마트 캠퍼스를 구축하게 되었다고 메릴랜드 주지사 래리 호건이 11월 18일 진행된 협약식을 마치고 발표했다. 협약에 의하면 한전은 한국 최대 에너지 공급 회사 LS 산전과 몽고메리 대학, 메릴랜드주 정부와 함께 총 330만 달러를 이 사업에 투자하게 된다. 이 협약은 지난 2015년 10월 체결된 ‘한전-메릴랜드주 간 스마트그리드 및 에너지 신산업 MOU’ 이후 양측 사이에서 이뤄진 일 년간의 노력의 결과이다.
협약에 따르면, 한전과 LS 산전은 몽고메리 대학 스마트 캠퍼스 구축에 스마트 그리드 시스템과 태양광 발전 시스템 기술 등을 지원한다. 내년 상반기에 저먼타운 캠퍼스 내 6개 건물을 에너지 효율을 높인 그린 빌딩으로 바꾸는 준공이 예정되어 있으며 한전은 이를 통해 캠퍼스 에너지 사용량의 10퍼센트를 낮추고 한 해 10만 달러의 에너지 비용을 절약할 수 있을 것으로 예상한다.
한전은 지난 8월 칼라일 그룹으로부터 콜로라도 태양광 발전소를 인수한 것을 시작으로 미국 에너지 시장에 진출했다. 이때 두 기업은 재생 가능 에너지 개발에 협력하기로 합의했다. 지난 11월, 한전은 버지니아 주와 에너지 신사업 협력을 위한 MOU를 체결했다. 이 협약을 통해 한전과 버지니아 소재 기업과 주 정부 사이의 협력 체제가 마련되었다. 한전과 버지니아는 앞으로 에너지 신사업 10개 분야에서 협력할 예정이다.
