With more of America’s attention turning toward the Asia-Pacific region, General Ray Odierno, the US Army’s Chief of Staff, recently paid a visit to one of America’s largest military outposts in Asia. Gen. Odierno spent two days in Seoul visiting US troops from January 19-20. While there, he reiterated America’s longstanding military commitment to South Korea. Just before his visit he stated that the United States is keeping a close watch on the Korean peninsula in the wake of Kim Jong-il’s death and suggested that the reduction in troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan will make more troops available to the Korean peninsula, should it become necessary.
